A Castle in the Clouds

castle

Sometimes I remember them as I walk through my empty house

I see them staring back at me

Trapped inside a portrait

Their eyes, their souls forever plastered against the wall.

They are gone now

Each one gone

My house is silent but outside the siren beckons

I cannot stop the noise

The sounds pour out

They are screaming, laughing, crying

My head is full of sounds

Of voices from another time

A time when I felt rich

Although they said that we were poor

I never noticed

We were kings and queens then

Our home, a castle in the clouds

Our Barron rooms a place for rejoicing and of fellowship as each night we gathered pretending to be more

I threw a blanket on the floor and the room became a dining hall

We ate upon the ground, a picnic in a world only we could see

My friends said that I was poor

I couldn’t hear the words then

I remember them as if in a dream and they were wrong I say

I close my eyes and deep inside

I see my house, it is silent but outside the siren beckons

I stop and listen

Honoring each sound, each voice, and I know that I was never poor

I look into their faces

Their eyes are peering back at me

They are screaming, laughing, crying

Time and space stand still

We are kings and queens again

Our home a castle in the clouds
